FAQ
What are Smilestrips?
The Strips are thin, flexible and are coated with a tooth whitening gel containing 6% Hydrogen Peroxide are designed to mould to your teeth.
6% concentration is the level the European Union Scientific Committee on Consumer Products deemed safe AFTER a dental examination to check for dental disease.
This level of peroxide gives safe and effective tooth whitening. It is broken down into oxygen and water and the remaining ingredients are washed away by normal saliva flow. The ingredients are safe to swallow.
Are they better than trays?
Smilestrips do not rely on you getting the correct amount in the correct place in your trays. Unlike tray based systems the optimum amount of whitening gel is already in place. This gives a consistent and controlled dose of whitening gel.
The strips are transparent and less bulky than trays, they do not affect your speech allowing you to whiten on the go.
When will I see results?
After using the strips for 3 days you will start to notice your teeth become lighter. Please continue for 14 days to get the best result. Your results will depend on many factors such as the nature of the teeth stains.
What if I experience gum discomfort or tooth sensitivity?
Some people may experience tooth sensitivity or gum discomfort when using whitening products but this is only temporary and NOT harmful. If significant discomfort or sensitivity does develop, try skipping a day and extend the total number of days of your whitening. If the problem persists, discontinue use and consult your dentist immediately.
What are the white spots I sometimes see after whitening?
These are temporary and not harmful and dissappear after a day.
Will Smilestrips affect my crowns, veneers, fillings or any other dental work?
The Strips will ONLY whiten natural teeth; it will not whiten caps, crowns, veneers, fillings or dentures. The Strips are designed to adhere to teeth. Do not use on loose teeth, temporary fillings or fixed Orthodontic appliances. If you do have any dental concerns consult your dentist to determine if the Strips are appropriate for you.
Is it safe?
Yes.
The strips contain Peroxide, the same whitening ingredient that is used for tooth whitening by most dentists. It is essential that you consult your dentist initially as Smilestrips are only available via prescription from your dental practitioner. Smilestrips are not a substitute for regular dental care and general care and maintenance appointments must still be attended at your Practice.
Why just at my dentists?
To get the best results your dentist will need to examine your teeth to check you are suitable for whitening.
Aren't they the same as Crest Whitestrips.
No. They are larger so they whiten more of your smile. Both strips are on one backing to allow you just to carry one packet to whiten both upper and lower teeth. Smilestrips are only formulated up to 6% to achieve maximum safe whitening.
What do I do with the saliva build up in my mouth? Should I spit it out/is it safe to swallow?
Some people will salivate more whenever they put something in their mouth. You may also notice a gentle foaming reaction as the peroxide gets to work. This is nothing to worry about and the saliva and peroxide is safe to swallow. The best thing is that the strips are only worn for 30 minutes.
Should I brush my teeth before/after use?
For the best resuls brush after using the strips. This helps remove any residue from the strips.
Will I get even results?
Each strip is positioned across the teeth and gently pressed into place, aiming to get maximum contact with the teeth. This will ensure even spread of the whitening gel.
